Billie Holiday - Body and Soul

Billie Holiday (born Eleanora Fagan; April 7, 1915 – July 17, 1959) was an American jazz singer and songwriter.

Nicknamed ''Lady Day'' by her sometime collaborator Lester Young, Holiday was was a seminal influence on jazz and pop singers' critic John Bush[2] wrote that she "changed the art of American pop vocals forever." Her vocal style -- strongly inspired by instrumentalists -- pioneered a new way of manipulating wording and tempo, and also popularized a more personal and intimate approach to singing. Yanka Rupkina - Keranka The Voice of Bulgaria

Yanka Rupkina played a major role in the growing popularity of Balkan music in the 1980s. Together with Stoyanka Boneva and Eva Georgieva, Rupkina formed the Trio Bulgarka, a vocal group affiliated with La Mystere Des Voix Bulgares. In addition to recording their own albums, Rupkina and Trio Bulgarka provided vocal harmonies for Kate Bush's albums, The Sensual World and The Red Shoes. Rupkina subsequently performed as a solist for the national television and radio Bulgaria group, the Balkana. This year she will be back with a new album released in October 2005.

Gunnel Mauritzson - Silhuette


Gunnel Mauritzson is one of the foremost folk singers in Sweden.

She is a musician with the ability to express music and lyrics in a new way, and she has sung with a number of the most prominent musicians in Sweden within folkmusic and jazz. Her musical roots are in folk music from Gotland (the island situated in the Baltic sea outside the Swedish mainland), and earlier she was for more then ten years a member of the folk music group Gunnfjauns Kapell.


As a singer Gunnel works both in her own band Gunnel Mauritzson Band, the group Nåra and in projects as church masses and big band conserts. She is often invited to perform as a soloist with the repertoar from old Swedish church hymns to jazz standards.

Gunnel is also a composer of new songs and tunes, often build upon the style of traditional folk music. And with the ear of a contemporary musician she brings in new elements such as new lyrics, old poems, wordless singing, jazzimprovisation, world music and so on.

For her work she has been awarded with several scholarships amongst others from SKAP (Swedish Composers of Popular Music) 2001, Stockholm county council 2003, and the Scholarship of Lars Gullin 2002.

The first 5 tracks here are from a studio set directed by Charlie Palmieri, and done in the best New York salsa mode of the time with vocals from Yayo El Indio and Adalberto Santiago, and other players who include Barry Rogers on trombone, Ray Maldonado on trumpet, and Manny Corchado on timbales all grooving tightly in soaring, soulful formation on tracks that include "La Guerra", "Oye Nicola", "Que Risa Me Da", "Descarga No 2", and "Descarga El Tres". The second half of the CD features some real killers from Johnny's boogaloo years as Johnny Zamot, tracks from his Decca albums and other indie sides that bristle with tight, jazzy energy! Theodore Walter "Sonny" Rollins (born September 7, 1930 in New York City) is an American jazz tenor saxophonist. Rollins' long, prolific career began at the age of 11, and he was playing with piano legend Thelonious Monk before reaching the age of 20. Rollins is still touring and recording today, having outlived most of his contemporaries such as John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Max Roach, and Art Blakey, all performers with whom he recorded.
