Bobby Hutcherson - Happenings

Bobby Hutcherson (born January 27, 1941 in Los Angeles) is a jazz vibraphone and marimba player. His vibraphone playing is suggestive of the style of Milt Jackson in its free-flowing melodicism but his sense of harmony and group interaction is thoroughly modern. Hutcherson has influenced younger vibraphonists like Steve Nelson, Monte Croft, Joe Locke and Stefon Harris. Read More...

Bobby Timmons - Soul Time [1960]

Robert Henry "Bobby" Timmons (Born: December 19, 1935 in Philadelphia - Died: March 1, 1974 in New York City) was an American jazz pianist and composer. He is best known for his role as sideman in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (1958 - 1961) and the composition of "Moanin'", "Dat Dere", and "This Here", each of which are typical of his distinctive gospel soul-jazz style. He also played with Kenny Dorham, Chet Baker, Hank Mobley, Sonny Stitt, Maynard Ferguson, and Cannonball Adderley. Timmons died due to cirrhosis of the liver at the age of 38 on March 1, 1974 after a steady decline in his career.

Allmusic
Pianist Bobby Timmons, best known for his sanctified and funky playing and composing, is mostly heard in a straight-ahead vein on this CD reissue of a Riverside session. Timmons's four originals ("So Tired" is most memorable) alternate with three standards and are interpreted by a quartet with trumpeter Blue Mitchell, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Art Blakey. The swinging music is well-played, making this a good example of Bobby Timmons playing in a boppish (as opposed to funky) setting.

Personnel:
Bobby Timmons (piano);
Blue Mitchell (trumpet);
Sam Jones (bass);
Art Blakey (drums)

Recorded in August 1960.

Track List of Bobby Timmons - Soul Time

1. Soul Time
2. So Tired
3. The Touch Of Your Lips
4. S'posin'
5. Stella B.
6. You Don't Know What Love Is
7. One Mo'

Chet Baker - Milestone [1966]

Baker was born and raised in a musical household in Yale, Oklahoma; his father was a professional guitar player. Baker began his musical career singing in a church choir. His father introduced him to brass instruments with a trombone, which was replaced with a trumpet when the trombone proved too large for him. Read more...

Allmusic
This CD features the trumpeter with his good friend tenor-saxophonist Phil Urso and pianist Dave MacKay in a quintet performing live in his hometown. The playing is excellent but the recording quality is a bit disappointing, making this potentially valuable set (a straight-ahead session performed at a time when Baker's studio recordings were very commercial) of greatest interest to Chet Baker completists.

Personnel:
Chet Baker, fluegelhorn, vocals;
Phil Urso, tenor saxophone;
Dave McKay, piano;
Harry Keevis Jr., drums

Live recording, Pueblo, Colorado, 1966

Johnny Griffin - A Blowin' Session [1957]

John Arnold Griffin III (April 24, 1928) is an American bop and hard bop tenor saxophonist. Like many other successful musicians from Chicago, he studied music at DuSable High School under Walter Dyett, starting out on clarinet before moving on to oboe, alto sax and finally, shortly after joining Lionel Hampton's Orchestra, tenor sax. While still at high school, at 15 Griffin was playing alongside T-Bone Walker in a band led by Walker's brother. Read More...
