Rokia Traoré - Mouneïssa (2001)

Rokia Traoré - Mouneïssa (2001)
Mp3 | 320 Kbps | World Music, Folk, Blues, Vocalist, Mali | RS
1. Laidu
2. Mouneïssa
3. Finini
4. Dianguina
5. Sabali
6. Tchiwara
7. Fatalité
8. Sakanto
9. Sé
If Rokia Traore singing the title track to Mouneïssa isn't one of the great pleasures of owning a pair of headphones, it certainly comes close. Her pure, angelic voice grabs the Manding material by its soulful lapels while maintaining a thoughtful note of understatement that's a nice antidote to the declamatory attack of many other Malian vocalists. She's arresting but never overpowering as gliding harmonies couple with the chiming plucked-string arrangement. This reissue of Traore's first album from 1997 shows fewer of the Western vocal touches than on 2000's Wanita, along with soft backing instrumentation that complements her voice like soft raindrops on tender seeds. Acoustic energy propels compositions that draw freely from the Malian griot tradition while adding bold but unobtrusive neo-folkie touches. "Sakanto" pairs the ngoni lute with the balafon wooden marimba, using her healing voice to knit the woody textures together. The fifth cut ("Sabali") surprises by ushering in the first palpable drum on the disc plus an electric bass that creates the tension for her bluesy song about getting wisdom. Though this warm and powerful CD displays Traore at full confidence, it only hints at the gifts she has still to give. Bob Tarte

Led Zeppelin - Houses Of The Holy
The song remains the same
Over the hills and far away
The rain song
The crunge
Dancing days
D'eyer mak'er
No quarter
The ocean
Like Pink Floyd, Zeppelin refused to releasing songs as singles. And yet, structured pop shines through on the folkishly delightful "Over the Hills and Far Away," the fun rock jingle of "Dancing Days," and the reggae- flavored "D'yer Maker." "No Quarter" contains a dimmer vibe, filled with buzzy guitars, a brooding piano, and Plant's isolated voice coming through in distorted tones, like a man coping with deep depression. Midway through, John Paul Jones plays a beautifully serene piano, only to give way to John Bonham's smooth rhythmic drum kick. The band's cohesiveness is at an all-time high here, as everyone involved gets to subtly show off. There's nothing coy about the next sublime rocker, "The Ocean," which anybody with half a heartbeat could stomp along to.
"Houses of the Holy" may have been Zeppelin at its height; the band could have called it quits after this record and still be assured easy classic-rock status. It's simply another great Zeppelin album that adds to a string of greats. The guys kept their style simple, yet branched out a bit and explored new avenues. Some would even say that all Zeppelin albums after this one were pleasant icing on the cake. Of course, the same thing has been said about Pink Floyd after 1973, as well.

Led Zeppelin - Presence
Achilles last stand
For you life
Royal orleans
Nobody's fault but mine
Candy store rock
Host on for nowhere
Tea for one
What they do is take a back to basics approach, performing as a band with guitars, bass, drums and Plant's vocals. No acoustic guitars or keyboards, just hard rocking Led Zeppelin. While this is effective, there is a noticeable lack of the dynamics of earlier releases and the eclectic variety that made Led Zeppelin be able to pull off a hard rock tune with mandolins.
The two key tracks on Presence are "Achilles Last Stand" and "Nobody's Fault But Mine."
"Achilles" has a galloping triplet bassline, some of Bonham's best drumming, and layers of Page guitar lines. It's an epic cross of "Immigrant Song" and "Song Remains the Song."
"Nobody's Fault But Mine" begins with a classic Page guitar lick, drenched in effects and gradually building in volume, then mimicked by Plant's vocals. The bass/drum rhythms are tricky here, with lots of stop/start mechanics. Plant's performance is memorable, with such gems as "m-m-m-monkey on my back" or "no-no-no-no-no-nooooo...nobody's fault but mine" plus the return of the harmonica.
"For Your Life" is okay, but kind of a castoff from Physical Graffiti. "Royal Orleans" has some cool funk rhythms. "Candy Store Rock" was a single issue from this release, but I don't think it stands up against their other, more superior work.
"Tea For One" closes things out with a return to the blues.
Some may have thought that Led Zeppelin was burned out, but they would make an excellent return with "In Through the Out Door" followed by their greatest band tragedy.

Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Custard pie
The rover
In my time of dying
Houses of the holy
Trampled under foot
Kashmir
In the light
Bron yr aur
Down by the seaside
Ten years gone
Night flight
The wanton song
Boogie with stu
Black country woman
Sick again
Disc one is more consistent, but disc two offers a wide variety of gems such as the building ballad "Ten Years Gone" which offers some of Robert's best lyrics to date, the fun old-timey feel of "Boogie With Stu", the countrified acoustic track "Black Country Woman", and the wild "Wanton Song". Many of these tracks have the feel of b-sides (which is essentially what they were) and makes them even more fun to listen to.
One of the few double LPs to truly be worth purchasing (along with the Beatles White Album, Stevie Wonder's Songs In the Key of Life, George Harrison's All Things Must Pass, and Pink Floyd's The Wall), Physical Graffiti is the high water mark of Led Zeppelin's career.

Tracy Chapman ~ Let It Rain [2002]
01 - Let It Rain
02 - Another Sun
03 - You're The One
04 - In The Dark
05 - Almost
06 - Hard Wired
07 - Say Hallelujah
08 - Broken
09 - Happy
10 - Goodbye
11 - I Am Yours
12 - Over In Love
Tracy Chapman's "Let It Rain" is a ray of sunshine. It's quiet thoughtful melodies ooze sincerity as they beautifully weave their spell. The title track is a soft breeze, "Give me hope that help is coming when I need it most." Greg Leisz's acoustic lap steel gives "Another Sun" an eerie haunting quality in juxtaposition to the strength in Tracy's vocals. The joyful toe tapper "You're the One" has me hitting the repeat button in my personal top ten, "Let 'em talk you down, call you names; my mind's made up; it ain't gonna change." Larry Taylor's upright bass sounds like a heartbeat in the slow & powerful "In the Dark," "Leave my body with permanent marks, faded scars & lines, but not a single impression of the things some do in the dark." "One hello, just one kiss before the tears come," Tracy sings on the midtempo "Almost." "Hard Wired" sounds like a peppy protest song that keeps wanting to be a ballad. "Say Hallelujah" thumps like a lively elegy for the dearly departed. "Broken"'s melody has the charm of an eastern European folk song. "Happy" is one of the softest, moodiest pieces I've heard in many a moon. On "Goodbye," producer John Parish brings in a number of wonderfully unique sounding instruments including gourdolin, oboe, cello and viola. "Over in Love" is a pretty instrumental piece with Tracy's acoustic guitar and Matt Brubeck's cello. The CD concludes with "I Am Yours," "When voices call me to question my faith, when misperception taints my love with hate, I am yours if you are mine." Tracy's CD packs an emotional wallop. While a couple songs will set your toe to tapping, most will softly lead you to contemplate reflective times. This is a fascinating and engaging work. Prepare to be touched!

Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova - The Swell Season [2007]
The Swell Season originally refers to the 2006 album by Irish musician Glen Hansard and Czech singer and pianist Markéta Irglová. The title of the album as well as of the song The Swell Season is inspired by Hansard's favourite novel by Josef Škvorecký from 1975 bearing the same title.
Well-crafted songs, an expressive voice, wonderful harmonies, thoughtful lyrics and a lightness of touch on this beautiful collection of acoustic-based melodies. Wonderful.

There will always be songs that the listener will feel were a mistake to omit, and for me "Ballad of a Thin Man" is the one I wish had been in this collection.
Disc One starts in 1962, with the folk days of "Blowing in the Wind", to when he went electric with "Like a Rolling Stone" from the ground-breaking Highway 61 Revisited, to the soft lilting folk/country sound of "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" from John Wesley Harding, released in 1967.
Disc Two starts with the romantic "Lay, Lady, Lay" from 1969's Nashville Skyline, through the 70's and the return of acoustic guitar and harmonica with two songs from Blood on the Tracks, to end the decade with the beginning of his Christian recordings, and a great track from Slow Train Coming, "Gotta Serve Someone".
Ten years later brings him to the fabulous "Everything is Broken", from Oh Mercy, and the collection ends with "Things Have Changed" from 1999, which was featured in the film "Wonder Boys", and the reason I bought this CD set. After viewing the film, what I remembered and liked the most was this powerful, marvelous song..
I am one of those that feel no one sings Dylan better than Dylan, and truly enjoy his rough, expressive voice; it is interesting to hear it through the span of nearly forty years on one compilation...it has become huskier, with a bit more wobble, but to my ears better than ever.
Total time for Disc One is 56:24, Disc Two 68:31, and the sound quality varies somewhat from song to song, but overall it is excellent.
