Amazon.co.uk Review
Paul Desmond composed Take Five, probably the most popular jazz tune ever, and played it on Dave Brubeck's chart-topping record. Altogether, he spent 16 years as alto saxophonist with the Dave Brubeck Quartet, but it is the albums he recorded away from Brubeck which show him at his very best. This collection of Brazilian pieces, in which he is accompanied by a very large orchestra, arranged and conducted by Don Sebesky, dates from 1969. His cool, lucid tone (like a dry Martini, as he once famously described it) soars weightlessly over the strings, woodwind, brass and Latin percussion, trailing the delicate wisps of melody composed by Milton Nascimento and Edu Lobo. The effect is so lush and attractive that you can play the CD as background music if you wish, but it also repays attentive listening - two for the price of one, as it were.--Dave Gelly
