It's hard to believe but it's been three years since Coldplay released A Rush of Blood to the Head. Now they are back with their third record X&Y. All of Coldplay's releases share one thing in common; they take some time getting into. When I first listened to Parachutes in the fall of 2000 I was not impressed. After a week it was the only thing I listened to for a six months. When A Rush of Blood to the Head came out it also took a few weeks for it to grow on me. The same thing applies to X&Y.

The Cinematic Orchestra - Ma Fleur [2007]

Cinematic Orchestra's fourth studio album, Ma Fleur soars from start to finish. The disc opens with the all-too-brief "That Home" which showcases a new guest vocalist brought into the Orchestra clan, Montreal native Patrick Watson whose Coldplay-meets-Jeff-Buckley fragility fits inside the folds of the sparse melody perfectly; his contribution to the sweeping soundscape of closer "To Build a Home" proves equally spectacular, adding an increased vulnerability and richness to the music. "Time and Space," featuring enigmatic Lamb frontwoman Lou Rhodes, offers the perfect combination of vocal ache with the lushness of cello and violin, eventually expanding into a full contemporary-classical-meets-downtempo vibe. Former contributing vocalist Fontella Bass once again brings her timeless soul to the mix ("Breathe" and "Familiar Ground") which will delight longtime fans of the U.K. band. Fans of Cinematic Orchestra's more upbeat hip-hop and jazz numbers from previous releases will discover that there is nothing especially uptempo on this disc; in certain respects, the evenness of Zero 7 discs may provide a more apt comparison, contextually. While that may frustrate some, the power of Ma Fleur from beginning to end is a holistic package of sensuality and softness that makes for a nearly perfect, perfectly timeless release. --Denise Sheppard

"Parachutes" is a really astonishing debut album from the British band Coldplay. "Parachutes" is best described as a mood piece--mellow, melodic, acoustic guitar, mopey at times but ultimately convinced that "Everything's Not Lost."

Coldplay's sound is a mixture of shimmering guitars, keyboards, and Chris Martin's incredible voice. His voice is probably the cause of the many Thom Yorke, Fran Healy and Jeff Buckley comparisons--like those three singers, he makes very effective use of his falsetto. His voice just crackles with real emotion. They have a great tendency to pair rhythm acoustic and lead electric guitars, which produces a very specificly textured and meshed sound.

All the tracks on the album are worth a listen. Highlights include the sublime "Shiver" (truly swoon-worthy), "Yellow" (simply romantic), "Trouble," and the last track, "Everything's Not Lost."

Highly recommended to fans of Travis's "The Man Who" and Radiohead's "The Bends." Coldplay shares a general musical aesthetic with those two bands, but they also have their own sound and musical project. Listen to the sound clips, and you'll see how Coldplay is both familiar and unique. You won't be wasting your money if you pick this album up.

Rhythms del Mundo is a nonprofit collaborative album, which fuses an all-star cast of Cuban musicians including Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo of the the Buena Vista Social Club with tracks from US, UK and Irish artists such as U2, Coldplay, Sting, Jack Johnson, Maroon 5, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs and others.


About Rhythms Del Mundo: Cuba

Artists' Project Earth (APE), a group committed to bringing about awareness of environmental disasters, climate change, and related challenges, spearheaded Rhythms del Mundo: Cuba. The compilation CD pairs a roster of wellknown British pop/rock stars with a number of Cuban musicians billed as the Buena Vista Sound (after the muchcelebrated Buena Vista Social Club, some of whose members are featured here, notably Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo). Conceived and produced by Kenny Young, Rhythms del Mundo: Cuba seems to have been recorded separately: the musicians recording versions of hit songs in Cuba and the Brits laying down the vocals afterward in either London or Barcelona (according to the engineering credits, at least). It's a little bizarre to hear "Clocks" (Coldplay) and "She Will Be Loved" (Maroon 5) get the Cuban treatment, granted, but it's curious all the same. Then there are a pair of Coco Freeman performances, "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" (U2) and "High and Dry" (Radiohead), that are especially bizarre, as they incorporate not the bands themselves, but rather samples of the original versions of the songs. In contrast, the more straightforward performances by Latin performers such as Vania Borges, Ferrer, and Portuondo are never less than pleasant, ensuring that the entire CD doesn't play like a crosscultural mashup. In the end, it's difficult to imagine who exactly is the target audience of Rhythms del Mundo: Cuba. Those who are fond of Cuban music, or Buena Vista Social Club specifically, aren't likely to spring for a compilation featuring the Arctic Monkeys or Dido, to single out a couple of the other pop stars not yet mentioned. Conversely, those who are fond of British pop/rock likely aren't going to be wild about Cuban music such as that featured here. In any event, the intention of APE was good, no question about that. For instance, the CD booklet is laden with essays about global warming, and while some of the writing seems rather polemic for the context, if not downright doomsaying in its urgency, it all is well intended and written, notably including a short piece by Al Gore related to his An Inconvenient Truth project.
