For those who have seen her live, I'm envious. For the time being, I'll just play and replay "Senamou". I've always found her voice to be amazingly powerful, and yet just barely above a whisper. What kept me from giving five stars was "Pearls" -I would have preferred to have heard Carlos and Angelique separately, and Josh and Angelique on a song by themselves. However, this CD still gets my highest recommendation!

From the Artist
...And on "Gimme Shelter," Kidjo transforms the Stones classic into an exuberant pan-national performance that nonetheless translates into a warning.

"This song means a lot to me," she says. "Look at what's going on: Fire is burning in our streets. Terrorists, in the name of God, are coming to destroy what we've worked for. If you don't give shelter to the people who most need it, if you don't treat them as your brothers and sisters, then what hope do we have?"

The contributions of stellar guest artists illuminate Kidjo's concept. By finding a place for their distinctive talents within the marriage of African and Western influences, DJIN DJIN celebrates the beauty of diversity as well as the unity of cultures that Kidjo achieves through her music.

These giants include Peter Gabriel on "Salala" ("He's done so much for African music; in fact, there's something African in his way of singing, moving, and writing his songs"); Alicia Keys on "Djin Djin" ("When she heard the Beninese drums in the studio, she said, `Wow, this is hip-hop!' She understood it perfectly - and she sang so beautifully"); Joss Stone on "Gimme Shelter" ("We're friends, so when I played her what we were doing in the studio, and she insisted on being a part of it, I was so happy that we could make this happen"); Josh Groban on "Pearls" ("He sings so effortlessly," Kidjo says, "and yet you know that it isn't easy to sing at that level of virtuosity"); Ziggy Marley on "Sedjedo" ("He understands so well the connections between the music of Jamaica and the rhythm of Africa - especially the gogbahoun rhythm that comes from my village"), Carlos Santana on "Pearls" ("He's not only a guitar player: With his guitar he sings, he dances, he swings, he cries - and he has huge respect for Africa"); Branford Marsalis on "Djin Djin" ("He's my brother! When he plays, you never know what you're going to hear or where his wonderful ideas will take the music"); and Amadou and Mariam on "Senamou" ("We go so far back as friends; it was a special blessing and a gift to have them on the album.")

Bebo Valdés

Bebo Valdés, Born: October 9, 1918

Valdés played piano from an early age and was very active as a performer, composer, arranger, and musical director at various Havana nightclubs, throughout the 40s and on into the 50s. During these years, he was also playing and arranging for numerous recording dates. Very highly regarded within the Cuban musical world, Valdés worked with many artists, including Mario Bauza and Ernesto Lecuona. With the growth of Afro-Cuban music worldwide, Valdés toured Europe and the USA. In 1960, unhappy with the new political power in Cuba, Valdés left his homeland, taking up residence in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1963.

He continued to compose and play but, despite the fact that his son, Chucho Valdés had become an internationally known jazz musician, it was not until the late 90s that he was brought back into a recording studio. Encouraged by Paquito D'Rivera, whose father was a friend of Valdés and who was also an associate of Chucho Valdés from their time together in Irakere, a session was arranged and took place in Germany. Valdés composed most of the music played on the session, much of it written in haste the day before, and his playing was in remarkably good shape considering the decades-long lay-off from full-time performing. Also on the session, with Valdés and D'Rivera, were Juan-Pablo Torres (trombone), Diego Urcola (trumpet), Amadito Valdés (percussion), and Carlos Emilio Morales (guitar; ex-Irakere).

This was the start of a resurgence for Valdés. His follow-up album was a trio set with Israel “Cachao” Lopez and Carlos “Patato” Valdés, although D'Rivera guested on some tracks. Then came other recordings through to the end of the century and beyond. Valdés can be seen in the documentary film, Calle 54 (2000), in which he appears alongside numerous Latin jazz exponents, including his son, Chucho, Gato Barbieri, Eliane Elias, Chico O'Farrill, and Tito Puente. The coincidental rise of interest in traditional Cuban music, prompted in part by the Buena Vista Social Club albums, played a role in Valdés' twilight career success. Nevertheless, it is clear that as a composer he is playing an important part in the music of Latin America in general, and Afro-Cuban jazz in particular.

Conga Kings Grand Finale

Comment: ''The Conga Kings is a historic recording session that brings together three giants of Afro-Caribbean percussion. Candido Camerera, Carlos Patato Valdes and Giovanni Hidalgo respectively. Each master has his own unique style, yet they complement each other beautifully. The camaraderie and good vibes shine through from start to finish on this fine recording.

Producer David Chesky came up with the idea of featuring three of the greatest conga players in the world. Musical director, Ray Santos who has had a previous working relationship with all three of these outstanding musicians over the years made the project a reality.

In addition to the Conga Kings there is a "who's who" of seasoned musical veterans here to support the masters. Joe Gonzalez on bongos, Guillermo Edghill on bass, Nelson Gonzalez on tres and chorus, John Benthel on second tres, Mauricio Smith on flute, Jose Francisco Valdes on claves, Herman Olivera Jr. and Luis Rosa on chorus (or coro if you prefer.)
Candido, Patato and Giovanni play a total of ten congas! This does not include auxiliary percussion and the rest of the band. This presented special problems which resulted in a never before used recording technique. The performances were recorded live with no multi-tracking or overdubbing, fed directly into one microphone that in turn feeds into a digital recorder. This allowed the musicians the freedom to create their own natural dynamics and resulted in a unique recording (you can hear Giovanni in the left speaker, Candido in the middle and Patato on the right speaker.) Did I mention that this recording took place in a church? Yep, St. Peter's Episcopal Church in New York City! One could say this recording was blessed!

I have been fortunate enough to see all three of these Conga Kings live. Candido is known for his exciting solos and incredible showmanship, Patato is known for his unique, melodic combinations and Giovanni is a child prodigy who has grown up to be a world class drummer.

El Maestro Tito Puente left us at the age of 77. Candido is 79 and Patato is 74. In comparison, Giovanni is still a whippersnapper at the age of 36! It is gratifying to see these masters receiving the recognition they deserve while they are still with us. Long live the Conga Kings and thank you David Chesky for coming up with the concept!

Que Viva La Musica! ''

Eumir Deodato - Eumir Deodato Plays Marcos Valle (2002)

In the '60s, Eumir Deodato and Marcos Valle were one of Brazil's potent combinations they enjoyed the type of strong rapport that Antonio Carlos Jobim had with João Gilberto and Flora Purim has with Airto Moreira. This collection of '60s recordings paints an attractive picture of Deodato's collaborations with Valle. Regrettably, Irma doesn't provide exact recording dates which is extremely frustrating but the music is excellent. While Valle is the composer, Deodato is the arranger/conductor. In addition to playing acoustic and electric piano and organ, Deodato oversees a predominantly Brazilian big band that includes heavyweights like trombonist Raul DeSouza and drummers Ivan Conti (of Azymuth fame) and Dom Um Romão. The instrumental Brazilian jazzpop that Deodato and Valle provide is very arranged, and yet there is still enough room for Deodato and his colleagues to get in some memorable solos. Melodic, easy to absorb gems like "Maria's Dream" ("Sonho de Maria" in Portuguese), "Summer Samba," and "Crickets" won't appeal to myopic jazz purists or bop snobs; these sublime recordings, like much of the bossa nova that came out in the '60s, are obviously meant to be accessible to pop audiences. But that doesn't mean that the material is uncreative or uninteresting quite the contrary. With these performances, Deodato and Valle proved the same thing that Glenn Miller proved in the '30s and early '40s and Grover Washington Jr. proved in the '70s, '80s, and '90s they demonstrated that instrumental jazz can have pop appeal without losing its integrity and becoming elevator music. Commercialism can, in fact, be a healthy thing in jazz if it is done tastefully, and Summer Samba: Eumir Deodato Plays Marcos Valle is a highly rewarding example.

Who is Deodato?

Despite a productive career, Deodato will always be best-known for a 1972 hit record, his catchy adaptation of "Also Sprach Zarathurstra (Theme From 2001: A Space Odyssey)." He began his career playing in a popular local rock group as a teenager. At 17, he was asked to arrange for a recording session orchestra and, despite never having written a score before, the teenager succeeded at quickly learning what was necessary. Although Deodato spent time studying engineering, he eventually decided to make a career in music due to the popularity of his writing. After working in Brazil's studios, he moved to the United States in 1967. Deodato wrote for the American studios and was involved in the still fertile bossa nova movement. He wrote arrangements for Astrud Gilberto, contributed three charts to Wes Montgomery's Down Here on the Ground, and was soon working for major names in several fields including Aretha Franklin, Bette Midler, Frank Sinatra, Earth, Wind Fire, Stanley Turrentine, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, among others. With the release of Prelude in 1973 (his first solo album and the one that included the "Theme From 2001"), Deodato became a major name for a time. He recorded sets for CTI, MCA, and Warner Bros. through 1979, although the efforts tended to be over-arranged and none caught on as well as Prelude. Since that time, Deodato was mostly outside of jazz, working as a producer and arranger behind the scenes, including for Kool the Gang during 1979-1983.
