Features 18 tracks including versions of 'Back For Good', 'Endless Love', 'Scarborough Fair', 'Love Is All Around' and many others. EMI Gold.

I download this CD to use as background music for wedding ceremonies - acoustic guitar versions of romantic hits often work well for this. About 1/2 to 3/4 of the songs on this CD are good, but the rest become too synthesized. Too bad because usually it's a very pretty performance until some cheap keyboard sounding effect comes in and ruin the song. I rate it at a weak three stars.

Mayra Andrade - Navega [2007]

Carrying her deep, warm and velvety voice, Mayra ascribes in Navega, a unique jazzy touch to traditional songs of funana, batuque, mornas and coladeiras. Her talent brings a true breath of freshness to the music of Cabo Verde islands -- the legacy of a blend of African and European rhythms.

Born in La Havana, Cuba, in 1985, the precocious talents of Mayra Andrade first reached a world stage in 2001. That’s when the singer won her country’s first Gold Medal at the Jeux de la Francophonie in Canada. Her crystalline and agile voice has since graced stages on the four continents. In 2006, Andrade released her first CD, “Navega”, on the Sony/BMG label.

"Navega", Mayra Andrade's debut album, has just won the prestigious German Records Critics' Award (Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik)! The jury is composed of 114 musical journalists.

Review Excerpts (Chris May, allaboutjazz.com
)

With Navega (which means “upon the waves”), a poised and totally gorgeous debut album by the 23 year-old singer Mayra Andrade, the Cape Verdean, Cuba star has arrived—and one whose journey to “overnight success” is likely to be measured in months rather than decades. Andrade's musici is a mixture of far-flung influences, in which traditional Cape Verdean rhythms and song-forms blend with Brazilian samba and bossa nova, jazz and a little French chanson. Her sound is sunny, infectiously upbeat concoction, full of light and joie de vivre, and it will put a spring in the step of the weariest listener.

Most of the music is acoustic, played by a core trio of Cape Verdean guitarist Kim Alves, Cameroonian bassist Etienne Mbappe and Brazilian percussionist Ze Luis Nascimento, augmented on some tracks by guest musicians on accordion, saxophone, trombone, guitar, cello or percussion. Nimble and unfailingly lyrical, the music wears its rhythmic sophistication lightly. Alves adds a variety of other fretted instruments for color, most frequently the treble-pitched, four string cavaquinho. Mbappe's bass—a sumptuously resonant acoustic instrument on five of the twelve tracks—locks with Nascimento's symphonic range of percussion to settle the grooves and trigger the tempo and rhythm changes.

All but one of the songs were written, and are sung, in Cape Verdean Creole. Four are by the iconic late Cape Verdean “new batuco” composer, Orlando Pantera, and three are Andrade originals. The accompanying booklet includes English and French translations of all the lyrics, and for once the exercise is justified. The songs have real substance, some, like “Dimonkransa” (democracy), dealing with weighty issues, and all are expressed with degrees of nuance and poetry which make them worth reading.

A remarkable debut. If music had the power of extending summertime long into the fall, Navega might do it.

  12. "For You" (Japanese bonus track) – 5:42

"Parachutes" is a really astonishing debut album from the British band Coldplay. "Parachutes" is best described as a mood piece--mellow, melodic, acoustic guitar, mopey at times but ultimately convinced that "Everything's Not Lost."

Coldplay's sound is a mixture of shimmering guitars, keyboards, and Chris Martin's incredible voice. His voice is probably the cause of the many Thom Yorke, Fran Healy and Jeff Buckley comparisons--like those three singers, he makes very effective use of his falsetto. His voice just crackles with real emotion. They have a great tendency to pair rhythm acoustic and lead electric guitars, which produces a very specificly textured and meshed sound.

All the tracks on the album are worth a listen. Highlights include the sublime "Shiver" (truly swoon-worthy), "Yellow" (simply romantic), "Trouble," and the last track, "Everything's Not Lost."

Highly recommended to fans of Travis's "The Man Who" and Radiohead's "The Bends." Coldplay shares a general musical aesthetic with those two bands, but they also have their own sound and musical project. Listen to the sound clips, and you'll see how Coldplay is both familiar and unique. You won't be wasting your money if you pick this album up.

Tracy Chapman ~ Let It Rain [2002]

01 - Let It Rain
02 - Another Sun
03 - You're The One
04 - In The Dark
05 - Almost
06 - Hard Wired
07 - Say Hallelujah
08 - Broken
09 - Happy
10 - Goodbye
11 - I Am Yours
12 - Over In Love

Tracy Chapman's "Let It Rain" is a ray of sunshine. It's quiet thoughtful melodies ooze sincerity as they beautifully weave their spell. The title track is a soft breeze, "Give me hope that help is coming when I need it most." Greg Leisz's acoustic lap steel gives "Another Sun" an eerie haunting quality in juxtaposition to the strength in Tracy's vocals. The joyful toe tapper "You're the One" has me hitting the repeat button in my personal top ten, "Let 'em talk you down, call you names; my mind's made up; it ain't gonna change." Larry Taylor's upright bass sounds like a heartbeat in the slow & powerful "In the Dark," "Leave my body with permanent marks, faded scars & lines, but not a single impression of the things some do in the dark." "One hello, just one kiss before the tears come," Tracy sings on the midtempo "Almost." "Hard Wired" sounds like a peppy protest song that keeps wanting to be a ballad. "Say Hallelujah" thumps like a lively elegy for the dearly departed. "Broken"'s melody has the charm of an eastern European folk song. "Happy" is one of the softest, moodiest pieces I've heard in many a moon. On "Goodbye," producer John Parish brings in a number of wonderfully unique sounding instruments including gourdolin, oboe, cello and viola. "Over in Love" is a pretty instrumental piece with Tracy's acoustic guitar and Matt Brubeck's cello. The CD concludes with "I Am Yours," "When voices call me to question my faith, when misperception taints my love with hate, I am yours if you are mine." Tracy's CD packs an emotional wallop. While a couple songs will set your toe to tapping, most will softly lead you to contemplate reflective times. This is a fascinating and engaging work. Prepare to be touched!

Al Di Meola - Al Di Meola plays Piazzolla [1996]

Who is AL DI MEOLA?

Intense, that’s the best word to describe the character of the music that took hold at the outset of the 70’s. Powered by stacks of amplifiers, propelled by rock backbeats, fueled with unbridled passion, and full of the spirit of jazz improvisation, this so-called fusion music coalesced into a full blown movement with the arrival of John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra, Larry Coryell’s Eleventh House, and Chick Corea’s Return to Forever. We can feel the intensity in Di Meola’s playing in his debut with Return o Forever, 1974’s «Where Have I Known You Before», or their 1975 follow-up, the Grammy-winning «No Mystery». That power-house formula of dizzying speed, demanding unison lines, and rock intensity continues on the group’s 1976 Columbia debut, «Romantic Warrior» and carries over to Di Meola’s debut as a leader, «Land of the Midnight Sun», released the same year on Columbia. His signature sound, the ringing sustain of a Les Paul played through a Marshall stack is an integral part of al those projects. Guitar Player magazine named Di Meola «best new talent» for 1975 on the strength of his playing on «No Mystery». It awarded him «Best Jazz guitarist» for 1977 and also named his «Elegant Gypsy» «Best Guitar Lp» for that year. Al went on to dominate the Best Jazz Guitarist» category, winning five consecutive years through 1981, while also earning «Best Guitar Lp» awards in 1978 for «Casino» and in 1980 for «Splendido Hotel». With those impressive credits, Al was instantly inducted into Guitar Player’s Gallery of the Greats, becoming the youngest player in the magazine’s history ever accorded that honor.

At the outset of the 80’s, Di Meola put his Les Paul on the shelf and turned to the acoustic guitar, touring and recorded with a superstar trio including McLaughlin and Spain’s flamenco master, Paco de Lucia. He returned to his old electrified ways briefly with 1982’s «Electric Rendez-vous» and its follow-up, «Tour De Force Live». In 1983, the same year he recorded the bravado studio album «Passion, Grace & Fire» with the acoustic trio, De Meola had a brief reunion tour with his old RTF mates, Corea, drummer Lenny White, and bassist Stanley Clarke. Though the tour proved that the intensity was still very much alive, no record was released of this powerhouse fusion unit, together again for the first time since the 1976 breakup.

Review from Alex Henderson, All Music Guide:

"Latin music has been a strong influence on Al Di Meola since his early years, and in the '90s, he paid especially close attention to the music of Argentina. A welcome addition to his already impressive catalog, Di Meola Plays Piazzolla pays homage to the late Argentine tango master Astor Piazzolla (whose distinctive and very poetic brand of romanticism was considered quite daring and radical in Argentina). It would have been easy for an artist to allow his own personality to become obscured when saluting Piazzolla's legacy, but the charismatic Di Meola is too great an improviser to let that happen. Though his reverence for Piazzolla comes through loud and clear on these haunting classics, there's no mistaking the fact that this is very much an Al Di Meola project."

Track List:

01. Oblivión (6:01)
02. Café 1930 (6:13)
03. Tango Suite, Pt. 1 (8:49)

Salif Keita - Moffou [2002]

Salif Keita (born August 25, 1949) is an internationally recognized afro-pop singer-songwriter from Mali. He is unique not only because of his reputation as the Golden Voice of Africa, but because he has albinism and is a direct descendant of the founder of the Mali Empire, Sundiata Keita. This royal heritage meant that under the Malian caste system, he should never have become a singer, which was deemed to be a griot’s role. Wikipedia - Salif Keita

Salif Keita made his name with Rail Band and Les Ambassadeurs, but he gradually veered away from re-Africanized Latin tunes to explore his Mande birthright. Then, in the late 1980s, he released Soro, a potent blend of traditional sources, Western pop, and savvy studio electronica that took the international market by storm. There have been other high points since then, but on Moffou, what went before is consolidated and transformed via the depth and patina of an artist in his prime. The set opens with a slinky, accordion-laced duet between Keita and Cape Verdean diva Cesaria Evora, but quickly moves on to the soulful Malian acoustic ballads that form the heart and soul of this masterpiece. Other tunes recall the insouciant heyday of Paris-posse Afropop, but minus that era's banal production values. Keita's voice is magnificent throughout; alternately silky, sensual, and ethereal, it floats amid Kante Manfila's intuitive settings like incense. - Amazon.com -Christina Roden

Product Description
Featuring entirely acoustic arrangements and Keita's stark vocals, this debut recording for Verve France is a suitably intimate, stripped-down affair. A perfect beginning for those looking to acquaint themselves with popular West African music. Also features Cesaria Evora, who contributes vocals to 'Yamore.' Digipak. 2002.
